List of the burgraves of Meissen

The castle county Meissen, first mentioned in 1068, began when King Henry IV, a viscount on the imperial castle of Meissen. The viscount of Meissen were royal officials to document the claim to power of the king. They represented a counterpoint to the Margrave and the bishop on the predecessor of the Albrecht Castle Meissen dar. to rule the viscount included several villages in the area. The Vogtland not counted later to the castle county. Both had only one common men. The viscount came from the family of the My Heringer and from 1426 from the house of Plauen. The castle county Meissen is not to be confused with the bishopric of Meissen and the Margraviate of Meissen.

With the extinction of the elder line of the governors of Plauen in 1572 ended the gender of viscount of Meissen. After the Plauen have never ruled as Viscount, now also the title passed to the Elector of Saxony.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the Viscount shows on a black gold St. Andrew's cross. On the helmet a golden square screen board, on the cross, which is sullied at the corners with 5 peacock fronds. The ceilings are gold and black. This coat of arms also led the viscount of Merseburg, Naumburg (Saale ), the Neuchâtel in Freyburg ( Unstrut) and Osterfeld.
