List of towns in New Zealand

The list of towns in New Zealand includes all towns in New Zealand.

The list is divided into cities lists and an alphabetical list of all places.

City List

The term 'city' (English city / town) is defined differently in New Zealand. The urban areas comprise a large city and the area surrounding the politically independent districts. Then there are places that actually have city status and therefore of Aldermen ( City Council ) can be managed instead of District Councils ( District Council ). In addition, areas are still recognized as an urban settlement area (Urban Area), which are actually influenced urban and who are independent of management areas. An exception is the greater Auckland area, which since 2010 by its own Council, the Auckland Council, is managed.

Agglomerations

The following table contains all agglomerations with their population according to results of the census of 7 March 2006. The population figures refer to the metropolitan area as defined by the New Zealand Bureau of Statistics.

Political cities

The following table contains all 16 cities in New Zealand with the number of inhabitants, according to results of the Census of 5 March 1991, 5 March 1996 6 March 2001 and 7 March 2006. The population figures refer to the city in its political boundaries ( City Council Areas). Listed also is the region in which it is located.

Geographical cities

The following table contains urban settlements with more than 10,000 inhabitants, with its population, according to results of the Census of 5 March 1991, 5 March 1996 6 March 2001 and 7 March 2006. Listed is also the region in which it is located. The population figures are based on the geographical urban area (Urban Area) as defined by the New Zealand Bureau of Statistics.

Alphabetical Overview

This list includes all towns in New Zealand in alphabetical order. There those towns were taken by Land Information New Zealand ( LINZ ) as a metropolis ( metropolis ), City (town ) or populated place ( populated place) were classified. Cities in the legal sense (city ) are shown in bold, with the four metropolises of several such cities and suburbs ( suburb / urban satellite) exist.

LINZ recorded in addition to these three locality types, you still farms ( farm / homestead ), local documents ( locality ), Pā and the already mentioned suburbs. These geographic objects are not included in this list.
