Lister Medal

The Lister Medal ( Lister Medal ) is a prize of the Royal College of Surgeons of England for services to the surgery. It is named after Joseph Lister. After the death of Lister money was raised to his memory in honor (Lister Memorial Fund ) and the prize was first awarded by the Royal Society, but in 1920 managed by the Royal College of Surgeons. The prize committee are representatives of the Royal Society, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The prize is awarded to surgeons of all nationality and was originally placed all three years, now also at longer intervals. It is connected to a sum of money and a bronze medal in 1984 and a gold medal. The winner will give a presentation (usually in the following year), the Lister Oration or Lister Memorial Lecture. They were to 1948 in the British Medical Journal and then published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons (and some separately as books).

The prize was first awarded in 1924. By 2010, there were 26 winners.
