Lit-et-Mixe

Lit- et-Mixe is a commune in the Gulf of Biscay; it belongs to the canton Castets in the Landes department in the region of Aquitaine. The municipality comprises the landward localities Lit and mixes that in 1825 joined forces, as well as a small settlement just behind the dune and sand beach, called Cap de l' Homy, which is connected via an approximately seven -kilometer access road to the rest of the community.

Place name

The place name probably comes from the Latin litus Lit (German: shore, shore ), mixes of mosconum (German: spots). Today, the church is decorated with the label La grande dame du Marensin; as Marensin the southern part of the Landes de Gascogne is called, where the spot is.

Location

Lit- et- Mixe is situated on the coast parallel Route 652 between Departmental D Mimizan and Léon, which are around 20 km from the capital of the municipality; this is part of the pilgrimage. Also, 20 km east of Lit- et-Mixe, the highway-like -developed route runs between Bordeaux and Bayonne National 10.

The neighboring communities are Saint -Julien -en -Born in the north, and Uza Lévignacq the east and Linxe or Vielle -Saint -Girons in the south.

Population Development

Early 20th century lived in Lit -et-Mixe about 1,800 in 1962, only about 1,260 people. The population has since increased only slightly - from 1,322 (1982 ) to the current 1524 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) - which is also due to a more restrictive building permit practice of the community in addition to the typical france " depopulation " of rural areas. This makes it the third largest municipality in terms of population in the canton Castets.

Policy

Mayor of the municipality since 1983 Bertrand Puyo, who is running again for the end of March 2014 local elections at the head of a list called Union pour vivre ensemble à Lit- et-Mixe. For the first time there is a counter bid, the litoise list alternative.

Economy

Agriculture and Forestry

More than three quarters of its territory, about 9,000 ha are forests ( mainly pine ) covered in the larger heath islands are embedded; they are part of the Landes Forest. Therefore, forestry and wood processing play an important role; the region is one of France's most important suppliers of tree resin. Chance of agriculture is still in operation (to about 10 % of the municipality ); in mixes, there is also a larger poultry farm which ( foie gras ) to manufacture and retail of foie gras, Enteneingemachtem ( confit de canard ) and foie gras ( pate d' oie ) is specialized.

Tourism

These traditional uses are now surpassed by summer tourism, although the bathing well on this stretch of coastline because of the surf reverse current (French: Baïne, courant ) is dangerous and prohibited by the day. Due to the flow conditions of the beach at Cap de l' Homy draws since the turn of the millennium increasingly surfers; there is now also opened a surf school. Lit- et-Mixe has several hotels, apartment complexes and camping in different categories; the accommodation capacity is approximately 7,600 guests. In the capital many restaurants, shops and boutiques are located, of which one part is not open before June, and not by the end of August.

The community has resisted in the past three decades, the lure, with its 11 km long sandy beach to approve directly on the Atlantic coast more than a municipally operated campground, a handful of single-story cottages and a small row of shops. It promotes not only bathers, but also with its wide range of natural hiking trails, mountain bike trails and numerous side roads that are well suited for cycling. An independent road cycling network is under construction; a first route leads from Lit- et-Mixe about Uza after Lévignacq. For reducing private car early 21st century a consistent parking management has been set up near the beach; during the high season runs a free shuttle service between Lit and the cap.

Church of Notre -Dame

The location in the center, fortified stone church with ziegelgedecktem ship was built in the 15th century. From this period also the finely carved wooden double doors and the stone Pietà are obtained near the tower entrance inside the church. Notre- Dame de Lit is today considered in the preservation Monuments historiques in France.

Vaulted ceiling, choir and the stained glass windows were restored in 1896-1899; a portion of the costs incurred for carrying the members of the parish itself was carried out in 1906 by the architect Jean Jules Mondet the influence of the Gothic Revival increase in the originally flat bell tower with a much sleeker, tapered tip at the corners four angels sculptures were erected. Sports and Events

Lit- et-Mixe has a small bullring, a modern rugby stadium and a place for the Basque national sport of pelota, which is here called pétanque. The local rugby team the SA Litois 2006 was even country master of all French Première série clubs ( eight top division ) and is currently playing ( season 2010/ 11) in the Honneur / Promotion ( sixth league).

On Ascension Day meet in Lit- et-Mixe annually thousands of friends of the 2CV with up to 2,000 vehicles ( "duck ").
