Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Litany of Loreto - Latin, among other Litania de Beata ( Maria Virgine ), " Litany of the Blessed (Virgin Mary) " - is a litany used in the Catholic Church, whose invocations are addressed to the Mother of God. Introduction

History

The prayer form of the alternating chant between cantor and people ( litany ) was taken from Judaism and from ancient cults. The roots of the Litany of Loreto located in the Eastern Church. A first Latin form is known from the 12th century.

It got its name after the Italian Marian Shrine of Loreto. From Pope Clement VIII, who in 1601 using a variety of litanies in the liturgy severely limited, the Litany of Loreto in addition to the Litany of the Saints was specifically approved for liturgical use.

In the 19th century by Pope Leo XIII. the invocation " Queen of the Holy Rosary" inserted, 1917, Pope Benedict XV added. the honorary title of " Queen of Peace ", in reference to the turmoil of the First World War.
