Litberg

The Litberg is 65 m above sea level, the highest elevation in the district of Stade. It is located about 2.5 km south of Beck village in the municipality Sauensiek. The Litberg is covered with birch, pine, willow and alder, small hill, which originated as a glacial moraine. It forms a conservation area on the Geest west of the Harburg Hills.

You can reach the Litberg best from the south of the village of Sauensiek or from the north, with the starting point Beckendorf or whose district Goldbeck. From the east you can also start in the village of Regesbostel.

The summit is located right in the forest, so you have the best view already in the ascent of the forest, and from the 25 m high observation tower, the Gaußturm was built in October 2008 at the summit. In clear conditions you can see the television tower Hamburg, as well as the Köhlbrandbrücke on the horizon. Furthermore, all around nice views exist on the Geest.

History

Carl Friedrich Gauss should measure the Kingdom of Hanover since 1821. The thereby emerging problems in the North German lowlands (lack of landscape surveys) he was able to overcome, among others, with the help of Litbergs, where he set up a survey storm to aim for his targets in Hamburg- Altona, Hohenhorn, Elmenhorst and Zeven better. Later this survey was documented on the back of a 10-D -Mark certificate.

From 1949 to 1962 it was mined here in the gravel and sand mining. Here, various boulders came to light. The terrain was after when the work is fully revegetated and left to nature, some of the boulders are located near the tower and mark the summit.
