Lithium is a chemical compound selected from the group of the tantalates.

Occurrence

A lithium occurs naturally as the mineral Lithiowodginit, said, however, the formula has LiTa3O8 and thus represents a different chemical compound.

Production and representation

Lithium may be obtained by reaction of lithium carbonate with tantalum ( V) oxide.

Properties

Lithium is a solid. It has a trigonal crystal structure with space group 3m and a specific heat capacity of 676 J / ( K · kg). It's like lithium niobate ferroelectric, linear electro-optical, piezoelectric and pyroelectric.

Use

Lithiumtantalatkristalle be used as electro-optic Q-switch and a substrate for integrated optics, sensors and frequency converter. They are mainly used for the realization of SAW devices. In connection with studies on the Pyrofusion a pyroelectric crystal of lithium was used as the voltage source.
