Lithol rubine BK, also called ruby pigment BK is a light-and heat-resistant red laked azo pigment. The compound was discovered in 1903 by R. Gley and O. Siebert and is the Color Index as CI Pigment Red 57:1 out. It is one of the organic pigments quantitatively most commonly used.

The sodium and barium salts are also recorded in the Colour Index as pigments (CI Pigment Red 57 and 57:2 / CI 15850 / 15850:2 ).

Properties

Coloristically yield the most variants a bluish red with high color strength. The light and weather resistance is only moderate, resistance to organic solvents, however, is good. The resistance to soaps, bases and acids is insufficient. The pigment is soluble in hot water (yellowish red color ), and insoluble in ethanol.

Use

The main area of application is printing inks of all kinds, as the color corresponds to the magenta different color scales. In the Plastics Division is C. I. Pigment Red 57:1 used for products with low requirements on the weather resistance. The pigment is used in PVC - cable sheathing since it has good dielectric properties. In the area of the paint pigment has only minor importance, since it has a low light and weather resistance. However, it is occasionally used in industrial coatings.

It is added to foods as a dye and used in some lip care sticks. Litholrubin BK is as a food additive number E180 approved for the coloring of ( edible ) coating of cheese ( quantum satis ). As an additive, it can cause pseudo-allergies. Particularly affected people thereof have the allergy to salicylic acid and its derivatives.

Some specific types are used for the coloring of special applications such as crayons.
