Lithophaga

Lithophaga truncata

The Lithophaga ( sea dates ) are a genus of medium-sized marine molluscs of the family Mytilidae. They are about 3-7 cm large brown cylindrical drilling shells and close relatives of the mussels.

The shells of the species of this genus are long and narrow with parallel sides. The animals burrow using the Pallialdrüsensekret in stone or coral sediment, hence the systematic name Lithophaga, which means "stone -eater ".
