Prehistory

For this reason, the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic on 16 December 1918 and the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic were first established on January 1, 1919. Both Soviet republics proved to be too weak and had no support among the population. Through military setbacks during the Soviet- Lithuanian War in January and February 1919, the Soviet leadership decided to merge these two republics. The proclamation of the Lithuanian - Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic was carried out on 27 February 1919.
