Lithuanian nuclear power referendum, 2012

The referendum in Lithuania 2012 issue of the construction of a nuclear power plant in Lithuania took place on 14 October 2012. At the same time also the first round of the parliamentary election in 2012 was held. The referendum was not legally binding on the Government.

Question

The question asked in the referendum was as follows:

" Pritariu naujos atominės elektrinės statybai Respublikoje "

"I support the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the Republic of Lithuania. "

Result

The Referundum for power plant construction was rejected by a clear majority of 64.77 percent of the vote. Only 35.23 per cent were in favor of the construction. The turnout was 52.58 percent.

Follow

On 16 November 2012, the Prime Minister-designate Algirdas Butkevičius announced with a view on the past referendum that the planned nuclear power plant will not be built. He would respect the will of the voters, Butkevičius said: "The people have expressed their will in the referendum and I will follow this will."
