The first round of parliamentary elections in Lithuania in 2008 took place on 12 October 2008 and the second round on 26 October 2008. Moreover, a referendum on the issue of term extension of the Ignalina nuclear power plant was held October 12, 2008.

Electoral system

To select the 141 seats were in the Lithuanian parliament, the Seimas. 70 seats were allocated in proportion to the parties that the 5% hurdle jumped over (7 % threshold for list connections). The remaining 71 were given as direct mandates on constituencies.

Participating parties and candidates

1603 candidates from 22 parties in 16 coalitions competed for the 141 seats in parliament.

Election result

Only in three constituencies candidates could achieve the required 50 % majority in the first ballot. The run-off election between the two to finish in the other constituencies was held on October 26.

Government formation

Government coalition

The coalition government has set out below Tėvynės Sąjunga - formed Lietuvos krikščionys demokratai, Tautos prisikėlimo partija, Lietuvos Respublikos liberalų Sąjūdis and Liberalų ir centro sąjunga that - unite a majority of 83 of the 141 seats - after fraction accessions. Became new prime minister Andrius Kubilius of the Conservatives.

In February 2009, the government was extended by a new Department of Energy, whose special task was the end of 2009 to cope with the closure of the Ignalina nuclear power plant.
