Litovel

Litovel ( German Littau ) is a city in Okres Olomouc in the Czech Republic.

Geography

It lies at the foothills of Drahany country in the valley of the Morava. Because of the six branches of the river Morava, flowing through the city, it is popularly referred to as Haná Venice ( Hanácké Benátky ). A branch of the river even flows directly under the town hall tower.

History

Originally on the site of the present town of Litovel was a fishing village. The river delta gave the place a natural protection. In the middle of the 13th century Ottokar II founded near the village of a royal city. 1291 Wenceslas II granted her some privileges, John of Luxembourg approved the construction of city walls. After the Hussite Wars, the city lost the royal privileges and came under the rule of the Vlašim, which was followed by the Boskowitz beginning of the 16th century. During this time, among other things, the Renaissance town hall with its 72 meter high tower was built. Beginning of the 17th century came the Liechtenstein by marriage to the city, which gradually lost its former importance in the following years. Incursions of the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War, and the plague Feuerbrünste sealed the decline. After reconstruction in 1850 Litovel district town of about 2880 mostly German citizens. 1899, the situation had been reversed, so that the Czechs won through immigration, the municipal elections. At the beginning of the 20th century was the place beside the still predominantly German cities of Olomouc and Uničov to a commercial and educational center in the region.

The city is famous for its brewery in Moravia, which was founded in 1893.
