Little Deuce Coupe is the title of the fourth, published on October 7, 1963 album by the Beach Boys. ( Whose recordings had taken place in September 1963 ) It contains eight new songs and four that had already appeared on previous albums.

Genesis

While the first three albums of the group had dealt mainly surfing ( surfing), was this fourth, completely composed up to A Young Man Is Gone by Brian Wilson album, a different theme: the theme " cars " it attacked another favorite activity of American youth. When songwriting Brian Wilson was supported by the DJ Roger Christian from Los Angeles.

Brian Wilson had just written the hit Surf City by Jan and Dean, and initially wanted to absorb any surfing songs more. Furthermore, the compilation was shut down with the same Beach Boys hit very successful. By adding four older songs, the album was recorded in one day. The album was released only a month after his predecessor Surfer Girl.

Although David Marks is pictured on the cover, his predecessor Al Jardine returned already on this album. His involvement is not mentioned.

This album also bore the words " Produced by Brian Wilson ," although 409 and Shut Down were not included in the new, but in the produced by Nick Venet versions.

It seemed a mono and a stereo version. In the latter, however, was the most produced in mono 409 only in electronic pseudo-stereo ( the record company Capitol called " Duophonic for stereo phonograph " it ) to hear.

The album peaked in the U.S. Billboard charts and number 4 was 46 weeks in the charts, including eight weeks in the top 10

Additional information about the songs

Little Deuce Coupe has already been published on the previous album. The song reached number 15 of the singles chart as the B - side of Surfer Girl. The song is about a Ford Model B, Mike Love had this car. On this song Hal Blaine plays instead of Dennis Wilson the drums.

Be True to Your School is the only song on the album that is not about cars. There is also a single version, this was recorded with the additional help of a marching band and a cheerleading choir. The choir was imitated by the American group The Honeys. This girl group was produced by Brian Wilson in the 1960s, but was quite unsuccessful. Member of the band was Marilyn Rovell, the Brian Wilson's wife in 1964. This single version reached the Top 10.

Car Crazy Cutie was later re-recorded by Brian Wilson, Bob Norberg and other friends under the project called The Survivors. The song was now called Pamela Jean and was released by Capitol Records as a single, but could not get into the charts.

Cherry, Cherry Coupe is a rewritten version of Land Ahoy, a later published on the collection Rarities song of 1962.

409 was the B- side of the first single by the Beach Boys and appeared already on Surfin 'Safari.

Spirit of America is about the same automobile and its driver Craig Breedlove, who in 1963 set a new speed record aufstellte. The song title also served as the name of a 1975 compilation released by the Beach Boys.

No-Go Showboat is about a car that looks very good, but can not drive fast.

A Young Man Is Gone is a tribute to James Dean. The title is a cover version with altered lyrics. The original is by Bobby Troup and is better known under the name of Their Heart Were Full of Spring
