Little Joe 5A

Little Joe 5A ( LJ -5A ) was an unmanned test flight as part of the Mercury program to test the rescue system. The mission was a failure, because as with Mercury -Little Joe 5 rescuing rocket ignited, without pulling the capsule from the rocket. Therefore had to be repeated several times but with Mercury -Little Joe 5B of the flight. By igniting the engine re-entry, the capsule could be separated from the missile and, after deployment of the parachutes watered almost undamaged capsule Atlantic. She was salvaged and currently can be seen in the Virginia Air and Space Center, Hampton, Virginia.
