Little Turtle

Little Turtle (* 1752 in Eel River, Indiana, † July 14, 1812, named after his real name Michikinikwa or Me - She- Kin -No- Qua, which translated means Little Turtle in Fort Wayne, Indiana), was a chief of the Miami Indians and is considered one of the most important Indian chiefs of North America.

Life

Little Turtle was one of the principal leader of a confederation of Indian tribes, the U.S. generals Josiah Harmar and Arthur St. Clair taught in 1790 and 1791 heavy defeats. St. Clair's losses in the Battle of the Wabash River, which took place on 4 November 1791 were the worst that ever suffered in the fight against Indians, a U.S. military power.

After the defeat of the Indian alliance against General Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers (1794 ) Little Turtle abandoned his struggle against the United States.

Battle Weary and corrupted, he became a pliant tool of the United States and its agents ( William Wells ) and favored the policy of land sales to the U.S., which also brought him in severe contrast to the traditionalists Tecumseh.
