Littleton Purnell Dennis

Littleton Purnell Dennis ( born July 21, 1786 Worcester County, Maryland, † April 14, 1834 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. In the years 1833 and 1834, he represented the state of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Littleton Dennis was a nephew of John Dennis (1771-1806) and a cousin of the same name John Dennis (1807-1859), who were both members of Congress. He attended the Washington Academy in Somerset County and then studied until 1803 at Yale College. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. In the years 1815 and 1816 and 1819-1827 he sat in the House of Representatives from Maryland. In 1829 he was a member of the Governing Council ( Executive Council) of his state. As an opponent of President Andrew Jackson, he was a member of the National Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1832 Dennis was elected in the first district of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of Daniel Jenifer on March 4, 1833. He could only exert about 13 months this mandate but because he already died on 14 April 1834. His final resting place he found at the Congress Cemetery in the German capital. His mandate was made after a special election to John Nevett Steele.
