Liu Qi (politician)

Liu Qi (Chinese刘淇; * November 1942 in Wujin, Jiangsu) is a Chinese communist politician. He was from 2002 to 2012 Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and was until July 2012 the party secretary in Beijing.

Liu Qi is a professor of engineering, and completed his studies at the Institute of Iron and Steel in Beijing, today the University of Science and Technology Beijing. Since 1968 he worked in the Wuhan Iron and Steel Company before he was from 1993 to 1998 Minister for the metallurgical industry. He then moved to Beijing, whose mayor he was from 1999 to 2002. In 2007 he was also Chairman of the Beijing Organizing Committee of the Chinese Olympic Committee for the Olympic Summer Games in 2008. In November 2012, he retired at the 18th Congress of the CPC due to age from all functions.
