Liu Xin

Liu Xin (Chinese刘歆/刘歆, W.-G. Liu Hsin, † AD 23 ) was an astronomer and historian of the Chinese Xin Dynasty. His father was the author of Liu Xiang. Liu Xin is the author of an astronomical system called " triple coincidence", which he described in AD 8 and published in a book. In it, he determined the synodic period of the moon with 29 43/81 days and a total of 235 synodic periods than 19 years. Accordingly, the length of a year would be 365.25016 days, which is only eleven minutes longer than the now valid value.

In addition, Liu Xin wrote a catalog of 1080 stars, in which he indicates the apparent brightness in a six-figure scale. He mentions this also the work of the officials Fu Buqi (宓 不齐, 6th century BC). He also calculated the orbital period of some planets.

On Mars, a crater is named after him.
