It was 186 BC appointed by the Empress Lü Zhi -grandmother to Marquis of Zhuxu and married to the daughter of her nephew Lü Lu. They called him also in the capital Chang'an, where he served as an imperial guard commander.

For his involvement in the coup against the Lü family in the year 180, Liu Zhang had originally promised the title of Prince of Zhao with the associated lands. When Emperor Wen, however, learned that Liu Zhang originally wanted to make his brother Liu Xiang to the emperor, he gave him in the year 178, only the title of Prince of Chengyang from the lands of his recently deceased brother. Unlike his brother Liu Liu Zhang Xingju exercised no revenge on the emperor, but -serviced so well that the people revered him after his death the following year as a deity in his country.
