Liu Zhiji

Liu Zhiji (* 661, † 721, Chinese刘 知 几/刘 知 几, Pinyin Liú Zhījǐ, W.-G. Liu Chih- chi) was a Chinese historian of the Tang Dynasty. Liu comes from the area of today's Jiangsu province.

Liu Zhiji placed great emphasis on the objectivity of historiography and was mainly limited in his works on gathering facts. In contrast to earlier historical narrative Liu did not expand to a narrative style of fiction and their own subjective interpretation involved.

In Liu's 710 published work Shǐtōng (史 通, " Studies on Historiography ") are discussed for the first time in world literature " Reflections on problems of history and historiography ." Herein Liu criticized the style and drafting and compilation of works by the older historians.

From 699 until his death in 721, Liu worked as a Confucian scholar in the then capital of China, Chang'an.

Could be detected at least twelve works, including Jiao is Zhuying (三 教 珠 英) with 1313 roles most extensively.
