Liudolf, Duke of Saxony

Liudolf (* 805 or 806; † 11 or March 12 866) was probably in Saxony since 840 Count. As the earliest nameable representative of the noble family of Liudolfinger he is regarded as the progenitor of this family. Probably, however, the family was already introducing him high Carolingian officials in Saxony.

Liudolf parentage is not known with certainty. His parents should be the historically otherwise elusive Margrave Brun (or Brunhard ) the Younger, his mother, his wife Gisla Verla. According to other sources, his mother was called Addida and was a daughter of the Saxon dux Egbert and Saint Ida of Herzfeld.

Liudolf was married to Oda, the daughter of the princeps Billung of the family of Bill Unger and Aeda.

He had large landholdings in the western Harz foothills, the area of the canvas on which he 852 together with Oda and Altfrid - the Bishop of Hildesheim and perhaps his cousin - in Brunshausen a nunnery founded, was buried in the Liudolf. 881 the monastery was moved to Gander home when the new buildings were completed there. In Gander Home Oda found their final resting place. The monastery was the place of the grave early Liudolfinger and thus to the central location of their Memoria.

Liudolf must have been one of the greatest rulers of Saxony. It suggests the fact that the German Ludwig married his son and designated heir of the eastern empire part, Louis the Younger, with Liudolf daughter. In the earlier research, it was undisputed that the Liudolfinger occupied the leading position in Saxony in the second half of the 9th century. Already the 866 deceased ancestor Liudolf was considered a " tribal Duke ", which his sons Brun and Otto followed in this position. Recent research is to assess this more reserved. The emergence of the " younger duchy " in Saxony in the second half of the ninth century, is now the subject of intense re-evaluation.

Liudolf and Oda had eleven or twelve children, including:

  • Brun, (c. 835; † February 2nd 880 ), since 877 Count
  • Otto I the Illustrious, ( * before 866; † November 30 912) ∞ Hadwig ( Hathui ), ( † 903 ), daughter of Heinrich ducis austria corum ( Popp Onen )
  • Thankmar († 878 ), since 877 abbot of the monastery of Corvey
  • Liutgard, (877 testifies; † 17 or November 30 885 ), buried in Aschaffenburg ∞ before 29 November 874 Louis III. the Younger, King of the East Franks, († January 20 882 ) ( Carolingian )
  • Enda ∞ NN
  • Hathumod, (* 840, † 29 November 874), since 852 Abbess of Gander home, buried in Brunshausen

  • Christina ( † April 1 probably 919 or 920), since 896 or 897 Abbess of Gander home, buried in the Collegiate Church Gander Home
