Liutperga

Liutberga (also Liutperga, Liutpirc, Liutburc; * before 750; † after 788 ), Duchess of Bavaria, was the daughter of the Lombard king Desiderius and his wife Ansa.

Biography

It was probably 763 for political reasons with Tassilo III. , The Duke of Bavaria from the family of Agilolfinger, married to consolidate the Bavarian- Lombard alliance. With him she had two sons, Theodosius III. and Theodebert, and the two daughters Cotani and Rotrud.

Marriage with Duke Tassilo

Probably instigated in the year 777 Liutberga and Tassilo the Kremsmünster the so-called Tassilo Chalice bears the inscription: " TASSILO DVX FORTIS LIVTPIRC VIRGA REGALIS ", translated: " Tassilo, brave Duke Liutpirg, royal scion ".

Liutberga was partly responsible for the demise of her husband, as they Tassilo III. is said to have incited against the Franks. That's why she was described by contemporary chroniclers as " evil, gottverhasstes woman."

After Tassilo III. 788 had been deposed by Charlemagne, he was banished Liutberga and their children in various imperial monasteries. Liutberga probably died before 794, because of her nothing was mentioned on the Frankfurt synod, before Tassilo had to answer again.
