Livermore is a city in Alameda County in the U.S. state of California, United States, which had 81,000 inhabitants in 2010.

Geography

Surrounded by some ( most of the time brownish grass-covered ) hills, Livermore is a typical medium sized, zersiedeltes Westküstenstädchen. From Interstate 580 runs east of the city over a 5 x 5 miles (8 x 8 km ) large wind farm with hundreds of wind generators of different types. The metropolitan area has a size of 62.0 km ².

History

The city was founded in 1869 by William Mendenhall and named after his friend Robert Livermore, a rancher who settled here in 1835. The " Livermore High School " was founded in 1891. Since 1918, the annual rodeo riding will be held in Livermore.

On 1 December 2011 was proposed by the discoverers of the chemical element with atomic number 116, the name Livermorium with the symbol Lv and adopted by the IUPAC on 30 May 2012.

Economy

Laboratories

The largest employer in Livermore and of international importance is the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. It was built in 1952 to assist in the planning and development of nuclear weapons as part of the national defense program. On the grounds of several IBM supercomputer, including the IBM Sequoia are now the currently (as of June 2012) the most powerful computer in the world.

Also in the town there is a location of the Sandia National Laboratories. Their main task is to develop, manufacture and testing of non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons.

Viniculture

The Livermore Valley is a well-known wine region. In the early 1960s the area under cultivation was as large as in the Napa Valley at this time. Nevertheless, it remained relatively unknown, while Napa Valley is now one of the most famous in the world.

Traffic

Livermore has a regional airport, which has around 150,000 aircraft movements per year. Furthermore, it is crossed by Interstate 580 and is connected to the WHEELS bus system, which connects the city to Dublin, Pleasanton and the BART system. Altamont Commuter Express Furthermore, the two stops was in the town.

Education

In Livermore, there are two public high schools: the Granada High School and Livermore High School. In addition, there are numerous Middle Schools, including Mendenhall Middle School and Junction Avenue Middle School.

Centennial Light

In the fire station the lights " senior " light bulb in the world: The " Centennial Light" (' Centennial Light '). Since 1901, a 4 W carbon filament bulb there donates almost uninterrupted light. They went out only in some power outages and has been moved several times during installation of the fire station.

It has a webcam set up with which anyone can convince if it still burns.
