  • Specialization
  • Centralization
  • Other reasons

Regulatory

Within the EU Directive on the protection of animals during transport is considered. This Directive provides for a maximum period of eight hours per transport, but under certain conditions ( special vehicles, Pausen-/Versorgungsintervalle ) can be extended indefinitely. In 1997, the EU Directive in Germany as the Animal Transport Regulation ( TierSchTrV ) was implemented. Depending on the species, the vehicles may have one to five charge levels: for example, horses one-storey, two-storey cattle, sheep and calves three stories and young animals ( lambs, calves, piglets) four or five stories high. Groups of animals may be transported only up to a certain number of pieces together. So may, for example, only 25 calves are put together. If more animals are moved by a transporter, so they must be separated by a solid partition.

Duration of transport

Does the dispatch and the place of destination within the country may amount to a slaughterhouse maximum of eight hours, according to EU Directive 1/2005 of transportation. Deviations from this policy are possible if the transport time due to unforeseen circumstances is exceeded or if the transport takes place on a special vehicle under Regulation No 411/98/EG. While transport of up to eight hours are allowed in normal vehicles, special vehicles with watering system and fans are prescribed for longer transport times. In the non -EU Switzerland the maximum transport duration is limited to six hours at a stretch.

Transport of animals in organic farming are also limited by law to eight hours. The ecological organic farming associations, Naturland and Demeter verpflicheten themselves but to limit the transport of animals over four hours and preferably not more than 50 km ..

Problems and criticism

Animal rights activists complain that even if compliance with the applicable legal provisions, the animals have to endure great pain during transportation. They suffered during the transport of exhaustion, dehydration and stress. In summer, the transport conditions were particularly excruciating.

The regulations on animal transport would apply only for the transport in connection with an economic activity. Private transport of pet animals are not regulated when going apart from general rules of animal welfare and the Highway Code. In connection with the private transport of pets Pet carriers play a role.
