Livigno

Livigno ( German Luwin ) is a municipality of the Italian province of Sondrio in the Lombardy region with 6014 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

Livigno is located at an altitude of 1816 m s.l.m. in the Livigno Alps, is duty-free zone and a popular winter resort. It lies on the river Spoel (now also in Italian so, formerly Aqua Granda ), which flows through the Livigno valley from south to north, is dammed by a dam on the Italian- Swiss border to Lago di Livigno and then at Zernez in Engadine in the Inn, and thus flows into the Danube. The valley is thus north of the Alpine watershed.

Trepalle, a district of Livigno, claims to be the highest permanently inhabited place in Europe at an altitude 1907-2250 meters, at the Passo d' Eira. History

Since 1000 AD the Livigno Valley is inhabited beginning of military - strategic reasons.
