Living in the Material World is the fifth album, or the second solo studio album by George Harrison after the breakup of the Beatles. It was on 22 June 1973 ( USA: May 30, 1973) published. In the U.S., the album reached the first UK number two in the charts in Germany in 20th place Charts.

Genesis

Living in the Material World was formed in October and November 1972 and January-March 1973, when George Harrison was after the publication of All Things Must Pass and The Concert for Bangla Desh the most commercially successful ex-Beatle. The album continued this success. Many texts of the songs reflect his religious and philosophical beliefs strongly. So it is with Give Me Love ( Give Me Peace on Earth ) to a prayer. Living in the Material World and The Lord Loves the One (That Loves the Lord ) were purchased from AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada affected. The first song describes the state of the physical world from the perspective of the author, the second title describes the religious beliefs of Harrison. The other tracks on the album deal with secular themes: the Wailing Paul McCartney against the other Beatles ( Sue Me, Sue You Blues ), a look back at the Concert for Bangladesh ( The Day the World Gets ' Round ) and love songs ( Do not Let Me Wait Too Long, Be Here Now and That Is All). In the song produced by Phil Spector Try Some, Buy Some, it is the original recording tape, which was sung by Ronnie Spector in February 1971. George Harrison removed the vocal track, slowed the tempo of the host bands and sang the title again.

Living in the Material World was the only album of an ex-Beatle, which was recorded in the Apple Studios. Klaus Voormann, who was involved in the recording, however expressed to the effect that the recordings actually in Harrison's home studio " FPSHOT " took place (an abbreviation for Friar Park Studio, Henley-on -Thames ).

Cover design

The album was released in a Aufklappcover. For the design of record covers of the designer Tom Wilkes was responsible. Wilkes' idea was George Harrison's aura to take pictures with the help of Kirlian photography and to use this image for the cover. Since the available unit was too small, the decision was made to photograph only the hands. The photos were taken in the Department of Parapsychology UCLA by Kendall L. Johnson. The cover on the front of the album showing on black background photo of Harrison's left hand, the covered during recording so that an image of Krishna, which occupies a portion of the palm. The cover on the back shows on a black background a photo of Harrison's right hand. When taking this photo Harrison had laid his hand on three U.S. coins, two quarter- dollar and one - dollar coin. The picture shot by Ken Marcus photo on the left inside of the hinged cover shows an image that da Vinci was an allusion to the painting " The Last Supper " by Leonardo. On the lawn of an estate, a dining table was set up, sat at the musicians who were involved in the recording for the album. Harrison himself standing in the middle of the panel. Since Gary Wright to see in the photo on the far right, could not be present during the photo shoot, his face was retrofitted into the receptacle.

Single releases

Another song of the recording sessions, Miss O'Dell, was released as the B- side of the single Give Me Love ( Give Me Peace on Earth ). This humorous song is about the former secretary of Apple Records Chris O'Dell. The single from the album Give Me Love ( Give Me Peace on Earth ) / Miss O'Dell was released in May 1973 as previously released the album and became the second number -one hit in the charts of the United States for Harrison ( UK: 8th, Germany: Square 28 on the charts ). Another single from the album was not made.

Reissues

First published in CD format was released in January 1992 In September 2006, the album in a newly remastered version on CD and vinyl LP with two bonus tracks Miss O'Dell and Deep Blue ( B-side of Bangla Desh was, . Single from the 1971 ) published, as well as in a deluxe edition; included as a CD with an additional DVD in a cardboard box.

More information

  • Do not Let Me Wait Too Long had already received a catalog number (Apple 1866), which suggests that a further single release was planned.
  • On the back of record and CD covers, the " Jim Keltner Fan Club" is advertised, an allusion to the "Wings Fun Club ", was referred to the on the back of the cover of the album Red Rose Speedway by Paul McCartney & Wings.
  • A demo version of the song The Day the World Gets ' Round appeared in December 2011 on the CD Early Takes: Volume 1
