Livingston County (New York)

Livingston County is a county located in the state of New York in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 64 328 inhabitants and a population density of 39 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Geneseo.

History

The County was formed on February 23, 1821 from Genesee County and Ontario County. It was named after Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813), a Member of the Continental Congress from New York. Parts of Allegany County was annexed in 1846 and 1856. In 1860 the county had 39 256 inhabitants.

Geography

The county has an area of 1,659 square kilometers, of which 22 square kilometers are water surface. Livingston County is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Monroe County, Ontario County, Allegany County, Wyoming County and Genesee County.
