Livio Vacchini

Livio Vacchini ( born February 27, 1933, Locarno, † April 2, 2007 in Basel) was a Swiss architect from Ticino school.

Life

Livio Vacchini studied from 1953 to 1958 at the ETH Zurich. After a stay in Stockholm and Paris from 1959 to 1961, he founded his own architecture studio in Locarno; he worked, inter alia, closely with Luigi Snozzi. He had guest professorships at the ETH Zurich (1976) and at the Polytechnic University of Milan (1982). From 1995, he operated an office in Basel together with Silvia Gmür.

Vacchini was a member of the so-called Tendenza and was founded in 1975 to international fame with the Zurich exhibition "Architecture of rebellion ." Together with his colleagues, Mario Botta, Aurelio Galfetti and Luigi Snozzi he committed against the urban sprawl of the Swiss canton of Ticino.

To Vacchinis most important works include the schools in Locarno, Losone (together with Aurelio Galfetti ) and Montagnola and the mail center in Locarno, the multipurpose hall in Losone and the redesign of the " Piazza del Sole" in Bellinzona. He won international attention not only to the construction of the new school of architecture in Nancy, France.

Controversial is his last great building, which in 2003 formed by a steel grid coated commercial building " Ferriera " in the " Nuovo quarters " of Locarno.

The documentary " Livio Vacchini. La sala polivalente di Losone " by Adriano Kestenholz was founded in 2001 at the Festival international du film d' art et Pédagogique in Paris with the " Grand Prix de la Qualité honored de l'image ".
