Liya Kebede

Liya Kebede ( born January 3, 1978 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia ) is an Ethiopian model and actress.

She was discovered while she attended the Lycée Guebre Mariam, and transferred to a French agent. After high school she went to France and later to New York City. She had her breakthrough as Tom Ford, it undertook for the Herbst/Winter-2000-Modeschau of Gucci. From then on, she ran regular fashion shows in New York, Paris and Milan. She was on the front page of the leading fashion magazines, such as in various editions of Vogue. She photographed ad campaigns for GAP, Yves Saint Laurent, Victoria 's Secret, Emanuel Ungaro, Louis Vuitton, Tommy Hilfiger, Revlon, Dolce & Gabbana, H & M and Escada. In 2003 she became the first colored model the new face of Estée Lauder. For the contract they should have received three million U.S. dollars.

Liya Kebede had small roles in the feature films The Good Shepherd and Lord of War - Merchants of Death. In the film Desert Flower (2009), in which she plays the lead role, she embodies Waris Dirie.

Since 2005 she has worked for the World Health Organization as a UN Goodwill Ambassador.

Liya Kebede is married since 2000 with the hedge fund manager Kassy Kebede, with whom she has two children (* 2001, 2005 ).
