Lizard (Album)

Occupation

Lizard is the third studio album by the progressive rock band King Crimson. It was published in December 1970 in Iceland Records.

Genesis

After the previous album In the Wake of Poseidon rose Greg Lake, who teamed up with Carl Palmer and Keith Emerson ELP, and the brothers Michael and Peter Giles from, as a substitute were Gordon Haskell, which is already listening to In the Wake of Poseidon, and Andy McCulloch brought into the band. This occupation was short- lived, as Haskell could not get used to the experimental style of the band and they have already left again shortly after the end of the recordings.

Style

Compared with the first two albums Lizard is influenced much more by the jazz-rock. With the increased use of acoustic instruments a surreal atmosphere is created on the album.

In the 20 -minute title track besides the typical for later King Crimson albums free jazz improvisation influences from the Bolero and the circus music (Big Top) will be heard.

Reception

Lizard is often the best, but referred to as one as one of the most inaccessible King Crimson albums. So Bruce Eder wrote in Allmusic Guide:

"At the time of its release, some critics Praised Lizard for finally breaking with the formula and structure did shaped the two Preceding album, but overall it 's an acquired taste. "

" At the time of its release touted some reviews Lizard for having finally broken with the structure of the two previous albums, but it's a total [ more ] acquired taste. "

Robert Fripp himself called Lizard later an " inaudible " album:

"Overall, the album is unlistenable. Our remastering shows just how unlistenable. I am unable to recommend anyone did part With Their hard -earned pay for this one, Unless theywant to take it to parties and play it at unwelcome guests. There are some " Lizard " lovers, I know. They must be very strange. "
