Ljubljana railway station

Ljubljana Central Station (Slovenian: Železniška postaja Ljubljana ) is the largest train station in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana and the crossing point of the double-track main line Wien- Maribor -Trieste (originally part of the Austrian Southern Railway ) and the single-track connection from Villach to Zagreb. It was built in 1849, when the construction work of the Austrian Southern Railway reached the city. In 1980 the building was renovated by the architect Marko Mušič.

Planning

2008 they began to build next to the station a multifunctional complex, which will be home to various office buildings and shopping centers, hotels and convention centers as well as residential buildings. The existing station building will be preserved and integrated into the new complex named Emonika. Completion is expected by 2011.

Trivia

In October 1904, the Irish writer James Joyce spent ( 1882-1941 ) a night at the train station on his way from Ljubljana to Trieste. In his honor, a small monument was inaugurated on Bloomsday 2003.
