The river flows through the Ljusnan Swedish provinces Härjedalen and Hälsingland.

The river rises in the Scandinavian mountains west of Ramundberget on Långbrottfjäll, near the Norwegian border and flows to the southeast until it joins 15 km south of Söderhamn in the Gulf of Bothnia at Ljusne after about 430 miles. The Ljusnan drains an area of about 20,000 km ² and average discharge is 230 m³ / s The river forms numerous lakes, including the Vikarsjön, the Svegsjön, the Varpen, the Bergviken and the Lossen. On his run, inter alia, are the places Sveg, Ljusdal and Bollnäs. The Ljusnan is used for power generation, 18 hydroelectric plants located at Ljusnan and one of its largest tributary Voxnan.
