Llanelli A.F.C.

Llanelli Association Football Club is a Welsh football club based in the coastal town of Llanelli.

History

The Llanelli AFC, founded in 1896 is a professional football club since 1912. 1914 was the first club in the Welsh Cup final, but failed after a 0-0 draw in the regular game by a 0-3 defeat in the replay at Wrexham FC. In 1922 the company moved into the Stebonheath Park, where to play today.

1930 and 1933 could Llanelli AFC win the Welsh Cup, but then had to wait until 1971 before the next triumph succeeded. 1977 and 1978 the club reach the last two championships.

Llanelli AFC belonged in 1992 to the founding members of the League of Wales, with the Welsh champion gained international recognition for the first time and is accepted by UEFA as official title. In the first two years of safe midfield slots were used, in the season 1994/95 was found to be in a relegation battle again and was able to keep up with two points ahead of relegated Mold Alexandra just the class. A year later they finished the season as Table and had to descend. There you missed in the following two years, the rise only slightly in 1999 succeeded as vice-champion of the second division to return to the top flight, as league leaders Ton Pentre renounced the place in the first division.

Llanelli AFC succeeded at first a fifth place in the following season it was but in the end back to the relegation zone. However, since nachrückte from the second division in the South no team, the club was top notch. The 2002/03 season was very successful, however, and behind with only 17 points was the only club in the second tier of gear, from which one ascended as champions in the following season.

In the first season after the return is still played for the descent, succeeded in 2006 with the second place, the best result of the recent club history. Thus the club qualified for the first time for an international competition and won in the first qualifying round against the Swedish team Gefle IF 2-1 in Sweden. A 0-0 draw in the return leg allowed the duel against Odense BK, but with two wins, 1-0 and 5-1, clearly prevailed.
