Lleida

Lleida [ ʎɛjðə ] (local [ ʎejðɛ ]; no longer official Spanish name Lerida [ leɾiða ] ) is a city in the west of the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia with 139 809 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). It is the capital of the province of Lleida and is 160 kilometers south of the Pyrenees on the river Segre.

Economy

Major industries are agriculture and tourism. In addition, there are companies in the food, chemical and textile industries.

Traffic

Lleida has a bus station and a railway station of the Spanish State Railways RENFE. This station is Lleida Pyrenees and since 2004 has been maintenance of the AVE high-speed line Madrid- Barcelona.

The Autovia A-2 motorway connecting Barcelona to Lleida directly with East and Zaragoza and Madrid to the west. The highway is partial toll road. There are also well-developed highways that run mostly parallel to the highway.

Since February 2010, Lleida has its own airport, which offers connections to Mallorca.

Education

The University of Lleida ( UdL: Universitat de Lleida) is one of the oldest universities in Spain. It was founded in 1300 and consisted initially until closing 1717. In 1991 it was rebuilt.
