Llogara National Park

The National Park Llogara (Albanian: Parku Kombëtar Llogarasë i ) is in Ceraunischen Mountains in southern Albania roughly 40 km southeast of Vlora. It is crossed by the National Road SH 8, which leads over the 1027 müa high Llogara Pass.

The national park was founded in 1966 and covers an area of 1010 hectares, the park protects especially the mountain forest of pines and shrubs on the north side of the Llogara Pass at an altitude 470-2018 müa

Fauna and Flora

This consists mainly of black pine (Pinus nigra), snakeskin pines ( Pinus heldreichii ), Bulgarian fir (Abies borisii - regis) and ash. Individual trees with specially shaped branches even wear name.

Wild goat and deer are rare in the area. Wolf, fox, marten and wildcat occur more frequently. Among the commonly occurring birds include the Rock Partridge. Also, golden eagle, griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture, raven, sparrow hawk and the eagle owl living around Llogara.

Leisure

In the national park there along the road several restaurants and a hotel, which serve as a tourist destination. There is the possibility for hiking and trekking tours in the park and the surrounding mountains. The southern slope of Llogara Pass - outside the national park - is a starting point for paragliders, which is used each year for an international competition.

History

In the vicinity of the national park, there are caves with prehistoric rock carvings.
