Lobengula

Lobengula (* 1833, † January 23, 1894 in Matabeleland ) was the second and last king of the Matabele kingdom in southern Africa.

Lobengula took over the reign of his father Mzilikazi after his death in 1868. Unlike his father pursued the peace-loving Lobengula no warlike policy.

During his reign, the capital of Bulawayo became an important hub for trade in Southern Africa. Lobengula continued the reforms of his father and led a progressive social systems. Modern Western principles of commercial trading were recognized. Unique on the African continent, a code was individual, albeit strongly limited rights established.

After the huge losses in the first Matabelekrieg and the conquest of Bulawayo by British colonial troops in November 1893, this 60 - year-old king fled from the burning city. But he was no longer up to the rigors and died on January 23, 1894 in the area of present-day Zimbabwe.
