Local administrative unit

The term local administrative unit ( LAU) refers to a state administrative hierarchy level, which is to settle below a province, region, country or other country-specific administrative unit. The term is not used by any country in this form, but it can still be used for descriptive purposes.

In the European Union, the LAU are in the course of using the NUTS hierarchy, the basic units. The two levels of local territorial units, LAU 1 and LAU 2, were called to the entry into force of the NUTS Regulation in July 2003 NUTS 4 and NUTS 5:

  • LAU 1: formerly NUTS 4, referred to community associations and management communities, and in the Member States, Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, United Kingdom and Cyprus used
  • LAU 2: formerly NUTS 5, refers to all municipalities and unincorporated areas or their equivalents in the Member States of the EU
