Local Government Act 1972

The Local Government Act 1972 was an Act of Parliament in the United Kingdom, of the Administrative Units of England and Wales on April 1, 1974 reformed.

His goal was to introduce a two -level administrative division that exists in large parts of England even to this day. Only the Metropolitan Counties have been replaced since 1986 and during the 1990s by a variety of new unitary authorities. In Wales, the management system was adapted to the English by the formation of counties and districts. But this was reversed and Wales instead divided into 22 unitary authorities, the most likely with the district-free cities are comparable in Germany (single administration) in 1996.

Also in Scotland, was first introduced a two-tier management system by the Local Government ( Scotland) Act 1973. This was on 1 April 1996 but, again, replaced by so-called Council Areas, which correspond to the unitary authorities in England and Wales.
