Local government areas of South Australia

The Australian state of South Australia is divided into 68 local government areas, the Local Government Areas ( LGA).

There are three classifications of LGA:

There are no legal differences between these LGA types. The differences are only in the name and simply reflect the historical differences contradict that existed in 1999 ( Law for the regulation of local government in South Australia ) before the introduction of the Local Government Act currently in force.

Only the coastal areas in the southeast of the capital Adelaide and the Eyre Peninsula are more densely populated. The majority of the land area of South Australia in the northern outback contains up to the mining towns Coober Pedy and Roxby Downs no major settlements. This sparsely populated country is managed by the Aboriginal Councils from the Outback Areas Community Development Trust.

In addition, five Aboriginal Councils, four of which are in the outback and the Murray River ( Murray - Mallee region) surrounded by other LGAs.

Each LGA is administered by a Council ( the Council), who is elected by the residents of the area. The President of the Council is the Mayor ( " Mayor ") of the LGA.
