Local government areas of Western Australia

There are 144 independent administrative districts ( Local Government Areas) in Western Australia, including Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands. They are organized in the umbrella organization of the Western Australian Local Government Association, which represents their interests and support, but is not itself a government entity. Mandate and responsibilities of the Local Governments are governed by a law of 1995 ( Local Government Act 1995).

These counties may extend to both urban as well as rural areas. Hence the name affixes City for urban areas, Shire for rural areas or Town for smaller self-governing cities will be awarded to characterize.

A local government area may comprise the center of a metropolis; single example in Western Australia is Perth City. The suburbs of the metropolitan area of Perth are managed by a total of 30 Local Governments. Some of them capture entire neighborhoods of Perth, have physically merged to the city center, for example, Bayswater City. Others, such as the Swan City, take numerous smaller satellite towns within a geographic region historically grown into one unit.

For smaller and medium-sized cities in Western Australia is often the Rurale surrounding areas with recorded (examples: Broome Shire, Exmouth Shire ).

There are Local Government Areas, which cover only bushland and coastal except for a small town ( county seat ), for example, the Shark Bay Shire.
