Local government in Victoria
The Australian state of Victoria is divided into 79 local government areas, the Local Government Areas ( LGA), and 11 unincorporated areas ( unincorporated areas). The areas wear next to the name, the designations
- City - for urban areas
- Rural City - for small towns in rural areas
- Borough - districts that have emerged in larger settlements
- Shire - Rural districts
The term has only historical background and does not constitute a different status. The unincorporated areas are comparatively small and with little or no population. It involves four islands, six resorts and the former mining town of Yallourn.
The current structure dates back to a major reform to the year 1994 around, were in the united the formerly 210 LGAs and redistributed ( " Amalgamation ").
A joint body of local authorities and an advocacy against the State without political decision-making authority is the Municipal Association of Victoria.
Rural Cities and Shires
The territory of Victoria without the capital Melbourne is divided into 48 LGAs. They are divided into 13 municipal districts ( citys, Rural City's and a Borough ) and 35 Shires.
Each LGA is administered by a Council ( the Council), who is elected by the residents of the area. The President of the Council is the Mayor ( " Mayor ") of the LGA. Some of the areas are further subdivided into districts ( or ridings Wards ).

Greater Melbourne
31 LGAs are in the urban area of the capital, Melbourne. This metro Councils form the Greater Melbourne region. 3.4 of 5 million inhabitants Victoria live here. The 26 -cities are also known as Metropolitan Area, also known as Five Shires Outer Metropolitan Area of Melbourne. A special role is played by the central LGA Melbourne City, a downtown, whose head bears the title of Lord Mayor (otherwise only Mayor ) and representing the city of Melbourne to the outside.
Geographically, one distinguishes the city center ( Inner City ) and the northern, eastern, southeastern and western suburbs ( suburbs ). Melbourne is also geographically from 217 districts, some of which overlap with the LGA.
