Locarno Train Station consists of two no longer interconnected terminal stations of different gauges. The Swiss Federal Railways operate between Bellinzona and Locarno, a standard gauge branch line of the Gotthard Railway. 1912, coming from Domodossola, meterspurige Cento Valli railway was completed, now there has their underground terminus.

Before rebuilding the railway station the trains of the Cento Valli train stopped at a separate platform on the station square. As part of this restructuring of the standard gauge part of the station received a tongue platform between the tracks 2 and 3 facilities of the freight both tracks have been removed and in its place was built the underground station of FART.

The station is located on the territory of the municipality Muralto, the municipal boundary to Locarno runs along the stream Torrente Ramogna west of the station.
