Locke Craig

Locke Craig ( born August 16, 1860 Bertie County, North Carolina, † June 9, 1925 in Asheville, North Carolina) was the 53rd Governor of North Carolina.

Early years and political rise

Locke Craig studied until 1880 at the University of North Carolina. After a subsequent law school and his admission to the bar he began a legal career. He was district attorney and legal adviser of the city Asheville. From 1899 to 1901 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina for the Democratic Party. His party introduced him in 1912 as a top candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election.

Governor of North Carolina

After winning the elections, he resigned on January 15, 1913 at his new office. His term ended four years later on 11 January 1917. During this time, the Public Roads Administration ( Highway Commission ) in North Carolina was founded. This is in conjunction with the advent of automobiles in those years. The governor campaigned for environmental protection. He promoted the state parks and facilities in North Carolina and issued general fisheries laws.

Retirement

After the end of his tenure, Craig worked as a lawyer again. He died in June 1925. Locke Craig was married to Annie Burgin. The couple had four children.
