The Lockheed Martin X - 55 is a testbed as part of the " Advanced Composite Cargo Aircraft" program ( ACCA ) of the U.S. Air Force.

Description

The X -55 is a modified version of the Fairchild Dornier 328JET, which was under the ACCA project by Lockheed Martin rebuilt in the Skunk Works. The project was designed by the Air Force Research Laboratory, the U.S. Air Force and is used for research into new composite materials. For this, the hull was long by 16.8 m and 3.05 m wide plastic cell replaced in order to achieve weight savings. Particular, it shall be determined whether the lighter plastic cell can withstand the high loads and lower maintenance cycles possible. The entire ACCA program serves as a basic research for a yet unspecified defined succession patterns for heavy strategic C -5 Galaxy transporter.
