Loculus (satchel)

The loculus was a Roman bag that was used in the military.

Description and Use

This Roman military piece of equipment was a rectangular bag made of leather. This bag was reinforced on the inside with leather straps. The loculus was 30-40 cm long and 18 cm high. That was just the right size to make the skin of a goat a bag. There were also variations with calf leather. Sealed was the bag with a triangular overhang of leather, which was equipped with a metal button. Contents were food rations ( 3-15 days' rations led a Roman legionary always with him ), and personal belongings of the soldiers.

It was borne by the Roman legionaries with the help of a furca ( carrying pole ).

History

The loculus was already in the Roman Empire in the Republic. It also stayed in the Roman Empire and was only not used in the age of migration.

They found parts of a loculus in Scotland, known but it is due to the illustrations on Trajan's Column.
