Loenen aan de Vecht

Loenen ( listen? / I ) is a former municipality and village in the province of Utrecht. Their total area is 27.25 km ². She had ( end 2010) 8,562 inhabitants. The parish includes the villages of Loenen aan de Vecht ( which was 953 for the first time attested in documents ), Vreeland, Nieuwersluis and Nigtevecht. Since 1 January 2011, is part of the municipality of Loenen newly formed Stichtse Vecht.

The community is located halfway between Amsterdam and Utrecht, and is crossed by the highway between these two cities. The railway runs through Loenen, but there is no train station. Most residents commute to work in Amsterdam, Hilversum and Utrecht; other live from tourism or are farmers.

Name

Loenen was one Loh ( Forest). Old Dutch " lona " is probably a locative of the word Loh, and means: at or near the forest.
