Loews Philadelphia Hotel

The PSFS Building (now officially Loews Philadelphia Hotel ) is a skyscraper in Philadelphia (USA). It is considered the first built in international style skyscraper in the United States.

History

It was designed and completed in 1932 by the American architect George Howe Switzerland and William Lescaze. The building has a height of about 150 meters. Atop the building is a billboard with the initials of the bank mounted. With 8 meters high red neon letters, the PSFS lights about 32 miles. The architect himself made ​​the proposal, instead of the full name ( Philadelphia Savings Fund Society) to use only the abbreviation PSFS, which in 1932 still not very common. 1976, it was regarded as a national and historic landmark. In 1997 the house was acquired by the Loews Corporation, which it re-opened as a Loews Philadelphia Hotel in April 2000. The PSFS sign was preserved as a historic architectural feature.

Interior decoration

The offices of the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society were housed on the second floor, so the ground floor shops were located, which not only paid rent, but also attracted the mid savings accounts holders of which survived the banking business. Today ( 2009) is located in a hotel.
