Lohkva ( German Lofkatten ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the Estonian rural community Luunja ( Lunia ) in Tartu county. It has 903 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2010).

Location and History

Lohkva is located on the eastern edge of the second largest Estonian city of Tartu ( Dorpat ). The place was first mentioned in 1220 under the name Lovecotte in the Chronicle of Henry of Latvia.

From the cemetery Lohkvas the visitor has a beautiful view over the valley of a river Emajögi ( Embach ). 1935 also a Jewish cemetery in Lohkva has been created, which is managed by the 1918 founded the Jewish community of Tartu. The historic cemetery buildings were destroyed in 1944 by German troops.

Famous people

Lohkva is the birthplace of the Estonian composer David Otto Active House (1837-1912) and the writer Charles Edward Sööt ( 1862-1950 ). A memorial stone to Sööts birthplace on his parents Mühlenhof remembered today at the popular poet.
