History
Loíza was officially declared a city in 1692 and named after the female chief Yuisa or Luisa, who reigned on the island when the Spanish conquerors arrived. In the early years, the population grew by freed or escaped African slaves, and Taíno Indians.
At the beginning of the 1930s, residents were brought from Loíza from today's Isla Verde in Carolina to Sabana Abajo in Carolina to accommodate today's international airport Luis Muñoz Marín. Therefore, many inhabitants of Carolina have their roots in Loíza and many families say that they come from two areas.
